Silt Layers and Water Well Drilling Rigs

A water well drilling rig needs special handling in silt—fine particles, high compressibility, low permeability.

 

  1. Auger rigs in silt: Their blades cut and carry silt upward. Silt sticks easily; clean blades regularly. Lubricate blades to reduce adhesion.
  2. Controlling drilling parameters: Keep speed at 20-30 rpm to avoid disturbing walls. Feed at 0.5-1m/h, matching soil removal capacity.
  3. Mud protection: Use mud with 25-30s funnel viscosity, higher than for sand. Add bentonite in water-rich silt to prevent leaks.
