Rock Hardness Judgement for Water Well Drilling Rig

Water well drilling rig operators often need to quickly judge rock hardness to adjust parameters.

  1. Observe drilling speed changes. If the rig’s advance drops from 80cm/min to below 30cm/min suddenly, with violent drill pipe vibration, it often means entering medium-hard rock with f-value over 4.
  2. Listen to the impactor’s sound. In soft rock, the impact sound is dull, like “dong-dong” drumbeats. In hard rock like quartzite, it turns crisp and short, similar to “da-da” metal knocks. Check rock powder too: soft rock produces flocculent debris; hard rock shows uniform sandy particles.
  3. Watch hydraulic gauge readings. In soft rock, system pressure stays stable at 12-15MPa. It jumps over 20MPa in hard rock; reduce rotation speed promptly to avoid bit overheating and wear. water well drilling rig
