Rock Hardness Judgement for Water Well Drilling Rig
Water well drilling rig operators often need to quickly judge rock hardness to adjust parameters.
-
Observe drilling speed changes. If the rig’s advance drops from 80cm/min to below 30cm/min suddenly, with violent drill pipe vibration, it often means entering medium-hard rock with f-value over 4.
-
Listen to the impactor’s sound. In soft rock, the impact sound is dull, like “dong-dong” drumbeats. In hard rock like quartzite, it turns crisp and short, similar to “da-da” metal knocks. Check rock powder too: soft rock produces flocculent debris; hard rock shows uniform sandy particles.
-
Watch hydraulic gauge readings. In soft rock, system pressure stays stable at 12-15MPa. It jumps over 20MPa in hard rock; reduce rotation speed promptly to avoid bit overheating and wear.
